Kimono Series #6
Another of the Kimono series. These 14x11 (mostly) pieces are now showing as a group at Saltwater Artists Gallery in Pemaquid Maine. Again, this work is repurposed original paintings collaged into a kimono shape, mounted on cradled board and varnished for protection.

Transformer
"Transformer"
Transformer is 11x14, painted in acrylic and mounted on cradled board. It, too, has been accepted into the juried show "Abstractions" at River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta. The juror, Dozier Bell, accepted this work as well as yesterday's piece, "Alumnae".

Alumna
"Alumnae"
This painting was just chosen to be part of the juried show "Abstraction" at River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta, Maine. The juror was Dozier Bell, a well known contemporary artist. I am honored to be among those selected for this show.
The painting is 24x24 on canvas, acrylic. I plan to make it into a series.

The Titans
"The Titans"
As promised, this is another painting from the series "Gods of the Ancients" which is showing at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick Maine. Stop by if you are in the area. This painting is acrylic and collage on canvas, 24x30, framed as you saw in yesterday's post. These pieces are all done from a model using gesture drawings. After than the drawings serve as inspiration for the ideas for a new painting.
A gesture drawing is a work of art defined by rapid execution. Typical situations involve an artist drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 30 seconds, or as long as 2 minutes. The primary purpose of gesture drawing is to facilitate the study of the human figure in motion. The practice allows an artist to draw strenuous or spontaneous poses that cannot be held by the model long enough for an elaborate study, and reinforces the importance of movement, action, and direction. The rapidity of execution suggests an aesthetic which is most concerned with the essence of the pose, and an economy of means in its representation, rather than a careful study of modeling of light on the form.

Zeus and Athena
"Zeus and the Titan" and "Athena and the Gorgon"
I am going to brag a bit today. On Thursday I hung 13 paintings at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick Maine. The show is in the fellowship hall and one room just off the hall. These two paintings are from a group of four called "Gods of the Ancients". They are acrylic and collage on canvas. Each is 24" tall. Zeus is 15 inches wide and Athena 8 inches wide. Both are framed.

Reflections
"Reflections", 6x9, oil on Yupo. This slick paper gives me options for gloss and glass that are fun to experiment with. The bottle is a funky shape and the ink well a darker cobalt. I worked to get the idea of still life on glass.

Study in Yellow
"Study in Yellow", 11x10, oil on paper. For this painting I was interested in getting a variety of yellows against a neutral background, but also keeping with some complementary tones. I don't usually paint on paper but this works and has a different look compared to canvas or board.

Mom's Vase with Marble
"Mom's Vase with Marble", oil on canvas board, 12x6. This vase belonged to my mother. I have had it 20+ years now. I love it and paint it to remember her. Marbles intrigued me. This one is opaque. As always I have tried to be thoughtful in my color choices. Light was from at least two sources and bit difficult to pin down.

Bath House, DP #20
"Bath House", oil on canvas, 8"x10".
This is a scene in Bath, Maine. The buildings are old and beautiful. It was painted outdoors ("en plein aire) in one sitting, wet in wet ("alla prima"). I was interested in the color and the shadow and finding the light.

Sunflower, DP #19
Sunflower, 6x8, oil on canvas board, mounted on wood. I love this little vase and thought this Sunflower from the market would be just perfect! This was painted in natural light in my studio.
Next to tulips, sunflowers are my favorite. I have other sunflower paintings I will post as time goes by.
Still cold here in Maine, so cut flowers in the house are really helping give the illusion of spring.
Daffodils just opened outside, so maybe I can paint them next.
I am getting my home studio ready to open for the season. Lots of work but full of promise.

Green and Red, DP #18
"Green and Red" is another small oil painting on Yupo paper. My objective was to paint in a limited complimentary palette. After the set up my eyes kept focusing on the shadow which, of course, I included. Oil on yupo is fun. I recommend it.

Blustery Day, DP #17
I have not yet braved the cold spring weather to go out and paint "en plein aire" yet this year. This small painting entitled "Blustery Day" was done last Fall. I went to a local apple orchard here in Jefferson Maine to quickly paint this small 6"x8" oil on Yupo paper. My easel got blown down twice and the painting almost landed on it's face, but I got the job done.

Kimono # 4, DP # 16
Kimono #4 is another in the series of 12 Kimonos I am preparing to show this summer starting at Saltwater Artists Gallery in Pemaquid Maine. The Gallery opens on Friday, May 22. I will show these twelve 11"x14" works along with two large figurative works.
Like the others this is a collage made of my original paintings. They were cut up and reassembled in the form of a garment.

Marble, Bottle and Shadow, DP #15
"Marble, Bottle and Shadow" is a 6'x6' monochromatic study of glass and marble. Again I was captivated by the shadow. It is painted in oil on Yupo paper, a very slick plastic paper that gives really interesting results. I am quite happy with this little painting.

Kimono #2 (In the series of 12) DP #14

Kimono #2 measures 14"x11"; it is a collage mounted on cradled board. Ready to hang!
It is part of a series of 12 collages assembled into the shape of a garment. Each collage is created with reassembled paintings of mine. This one is made of only one painting, a work that began its life as an oil painting on Yupo paper of a vase, an onion and two garlics straight from a friend's garden (or maybe the farmer's market?). It was my first painting using this paper and I had no idea how to handle it, thus the unsuccessful painting. However I rather like its rebirth as a collage.

Daily Painting Number 10
"The Diver" is a 5x7 charcoal and acrylic painting that was originally a larger less successful painting. The painting was dis-assembled into several small works. The companion piece to this painting, "The Bathers" has been sold.
As with most of my figurative work, this began as charcoal drawings in gesture form of a live model. It evolved into what you see now.

Radishes, DP #13
SOLD
Radishes, 11x14, oil on canvas. Even though this painting is no longer available, I thought it would be interesting to see another radish painting done a bit more abstractly and with bolder color. This one was in a show last Fall at Damariscotta River Grill in Midcoast Maine. It was purchased as a Christmas present. It now resides in Santa Fe.
